January's Bedroom
/It’s been a minute since I started this bedroom refresh. If you’ve done any sort of home project during the pandemic, you know how slow going they can be… And on top of that, a kid’s bedroom with little ones constantly running in and out? Forget about it. But this week I finally tied all the loose ends and wrapped up January’s bedroom refresh!
I think just as different wines pair better with certain foods (which I know nothing about), individual designers have different tastes that pair better with certain rooms, clients, etc.. What can make a designer stand out is even through their ability to be versatile, you can still recognize their work.
One reason that I love to work on my children’s bedrooms is because I get to flex these other styles within me. I love playing with the whimsical elements that a kid’s bedroom evokes. I think that sometimes we see that people can get so worked up over the fact that these children aren’t getting the childhood bedroom that so many of us can relate to. Instagram and Pinterest weren’t a thing, and most moms were not in the realm of curating these perfectly photographable bedrooms for their kids – the pages in the JCPenney catalog just didn’t hit the same way a social media super mom’s page does. While there is nothing wrong with those Hanson or Tweety bird posters we had, there is also nothing wrong with a mom getting a little bit of her say in the styling of her child’s room – I’m all for team mom, we’ve had to fight and earned our right to party…er decorate.
As I took on January’s bedroom refresh, I certainly considered her personality and style and I also built on top of what we had already done in there so far. The room has been painted in phases as my bravery towards color in there has built too. First it was all white walls with ‘Moroccan Clay’ painted trim. Next, I did color blocked walls with the white exposed on top and the Moroccan Clay on bottom. This month, I let that deep rose take over the room and painted all walls and trim to match. Heck, I would have done the ceiling too, but leaving those glow in the dark stars up were a compromise we made.
Next, we did a bit of rearranging with her furniture. During the beginning of virtual learning during the pandemic, I built her a desk for her bedroom. As she has not needed it now, and hopefully never again under those circumstances, I decided to get that extra space back by removing it. We added a third shelf, one that used to be in there, and now she can easily display and play with her Friends Lego sets. Her shelves are a fun spot to display collections (jewels), her favorite books, and a few décor items we both find pretty.
As I moved furniture around I wanted her bed to really pop against that elaborate mural. To incorporate more color and patterns, I drew from her rug the blues and brought that furthermore with a DIY headboard and blue florals in her sheets. And to really set that mural apart, I framed the wall with picture frame moulding.
All of these elements take a little girl’s bedroom to a bit more sophisticated version through simple DIY’s and thoughtful design. If you have a little one at home, we’ve gathered some extra room inspiration for you!
